Summary This article talks about how The Trump administration wants to remove The Obama’s administration’s acts on protecting transgender students from discrimination when it comes to bathroom use for the person’s preferred. The Obama administration allowed transgender students to freely use the bathroom of their preferred gender without any issues. This is a huge conflict for the united states, because some places and people agree with the Trump Administration’s moves, while others do not, saying that this is taking away LGBT rights, in which it totally is. If the guidance from the Obama administration is removed, LGBT youth may be targeted to hate and discrimination on school campus. “For transgender students, being in a school that affirms and supports their gender identity is critical to ensuring that they too can experience adolescence in a healthy and constructive manner,”said a medical society about the matter. Even the Education secretary, Betsy DeVos said, “I consider protecting all students, including #LGBTQ students, not only a key priority for the Department, but for every school in America.” (twitter) Yet, When the press secretary talked to the media about the vote for the removal of the Obama administration’s work, he said they all agreed on the matter, including Trump. On the other hand, Trump said that he is an ally of the LGTBQ society and has no problem with letting celebrities such as Caitlyn Jenner use her appropriate bathroom at Trump tower. Questions: -Should the Trump administration really be allowed to try and control bathroom use in schools? Why or why not? -What do you believe that Trump should do regarding his two sided opinions on this matter? -Do you think that this matter is invasive of a person's privacy? how so? Connection to UDHR According to article 1 of the universal declaration of human rights, “All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood”. The Trump administration is not realising that transgender people are the exact same as any other normal person on this planet, and shouldn’t be told to go in the wrong bathroom. If a person identifies as male, they should go to the male bathroom. People should feel comfortable in life, and making them go into the wrong gender’s bathroom may make them feel uncomfortable. Also according to article 2 of the universal declaration of human rights, Everyone is entitled to all the rights and freedoms set forth in this Declaration, without distinction of any kind, such as race, colour, sex, language, religion, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth or other status.” This relates to the article because, once again the Trump Administration is trying to take away people’s rights by telling them where to go to the bathroom, even if it is not their preferred gender. In this day and age, people have the right to do whatever they want when it comes to gender identity, and the Trump administration should not be trying to violate their rights by taking away the Obama Administration’s work. Furthermore, according to article 7, “All are equal before the law and are entitled without any discrimination to equal protection of the law. All are entitled to equal protection against any discrimination in violation of this Declaration and against any incitement to such discrimination.” Trump’s administration is taking away the protection of transgender people that was finally granted to them by the Obama administration last year. If the Obama administration’s work removed, then transgender people are to become susceptible again to gender discrimination, practically stripping them of their human rights.
